about

This piece was played in one continuous, improvised take, with no overdubs, by one person on one instrument (depending on how you count). It's essentially a microtonal guitar (which can also be played bowed, but isn't here) with movable frets and an electro-acoustic drum component.

The piece is microtonal. The scale is not derived from just intonation. Neither is it an equal tempered scale of any kind. I choose intervals according to the mood I want to create, based on experience.

Because the drum is played simultaneously by the string player, it allows the freedom to change tempo, meter or rhythm on the fly.

I also have two records on the Spectropol label, also available through bandcamp:

about

Paul Rubenstein Queens, New York

I'm a multi-instrumentalist, improviser, composer and instrument inventor/builder. I've played in a rock band (Neem) which I wrote all the songs for, in a world-fusion improv duo (Bakshish), an experimental avant-garde band (Spacepeople) and plenty of solo stuff, including film scores. Did music for improv theater and modern dance. I play music every day but rarely perform or release these days. ... more
