from guituareg by Paul Rubenstein

about

Along the same musical lines as the others in the guituareg series, but microtonal, using selected intervals from 14 and 15 equal divisions of the octave, featuring a movable fretted guitarish instrument I made, called the ultratar. The ultratar has two necks, an automatic drone, electro-acoustic percussion, a plectrumed electric m'bira. The strings can be bowed, plucked or hammered. On this piece I don't make use of all it's features; it's mainly functioning as a microtonal guitar/bass/tanbura (one neck has a set of buzzing strings).
Unlike the other pieces, this one modulates a few times, shifing the tonal center to play different modes within the same scale.
March 2023 edit: I've replaced the file with a new mix, which I think is much better. The old one was too cluttered and chaotic (even for me!). This one has more space to breathe and is more enjoyable to listen to, IMHO.

I've played in a rock band (Neem) which I wrote all the songs for, in a world-fusion improv duo (Bakshish), an experimental avant-garde band (Spacepeople) and plenty of solo stuff, including film scores. Did music for improv theater and modern dance. I play music every day but rarely perform or release these days. ... more
